These terms apply to tutors who teach families through Maths Tutor Coventry. They explain how lessons, payment and cancellations work, and what we expect from each other. If anything isn't clear, email hello@mathstutorcoventry.com.
1. About us and these terms
Maths Tutor Coventry is run by Oliver King, trading as Maths Tutor Coventry, 70 Meadow Road, Wolston, Coventry CV8 3JJ. We find families, match each student with a tutor, arrange lessons and take payment through our app. Families agree separate terms of service with us.
2. Your status
- You work with us as a self-employed tutor, not as an employee or worker. You decide whether to accept students and when you're available, and you're free to work for others.
- You're responsible for your own tax and National Insurance on what you earn.
- We can't guarantee a particular number of students or lessons.
3. Safeguarding and checks
- Before you teach through us, you'll give us a current enhanced DBS certificate (or be registered with the DBS Update Service) and proof of your right to work in the UK. Tell us straight away if anything changes that could affect your suitability to work with children.
- Keep contact about lessons to the student's parent or guardian, and follow good safeguarding practice. If you have a concern about a child's safety, tell us as soon as possible — and if a child is in immediate danger, call 999 first.
4. Lessons
- Every lesson lasts 1 hour. Families book from the availability you set in the app, so keep your weekly availability and time off up to date.
- Be on time and prepared, and teach with reasonable care and skill.
- Log each lesson in the app after it happens. Logging is what charges the family and pays you, so only log lessons that took place, for the full hour. If a lesson didn't happen, use “Lesson didn't happen” instead so the family isn't charged.
5. Your rate and our commission
- You set your hourly rate in the app, from £10 an hour, and we approve it before it's used. A first rate or a lower rate applies straight away; an increase applies to lessons starting at least 28 days after we approve it, so families get notice. Lessons already booked keep their price.
- We keep a flat £5 commission per lesson from your rate. For example, at £35 an hour you receive £30 for each lesson.
- Families pay a small card processing fee on top of your rate, so card fees don't come out of your share.
6. Getting paid
- We pay you through Stripe. You'll set up payouts in the app once, giving Stripe your details and bank account; Stripe may ask for identity checks.
- For families who pay by card, your share is sent to your Stripe account 48 hours after you log the lesson, once the family's payment has gone through. Stripe then pays it into your bank, usually within a few working days.
- If a family's payment fails, we'll chase it and pause logging for that student until it's sorted. You're paid for the lesson once the payment succeeds.
- For any family who pays us offline, we'll agree how and when you're paid separately.
7. Complaints, refunds and disputes
- The 48 hours before payout give families time to raise a problem. During that time we may hold your payment for a lesson while we look into a complaint, and we'll talk to you before deciding.
- If a lesson you logged didn't take place as agreed and we refund the family, you won't be paid for that lesson — and if you've already been paid, your share is taken back through Stripe.
- Logging a lesson that didn't happen is a serious breach of these terms.
8. Cancellations
- If you can't teach a lesson, cancel it in the app as early as you can and say why. The family isn't charged, and you can offer them up to three replacement times.
- Families can cancel or move lessons free of charge more than 24 hours ahead. Within 24 hours they contact us instead, and we'll keep you informed. We don't currently charge families for late cancellations, so you're not paid for lessons that don't take place.
- Frequent cancellations may mean we match fewer students with you.
9. Families we introduce
Families come to you through us, so please teach them only through Maths Tutor Coventry. While you work with us, and for 12 months afterwards, don't arrange lessons privately with a family we introduced to you, unless we've agreed it with you in writing first.
10. Confidentiality and personal information
- Use students' and families' details only to teach and arrange their lessons. Keep them secure, don't share them, and delete any copies you hold when you stop teaching that student.
- Keep your app login and your private calendar link to yourself. Tell us straight away if you think someone else has accessed them.
- How we use your own information is explained in our privacy policy.
11. Insurance and responsibility
We recommend you hold your own public liability insurance, especially if you teach in families' homes. Nothing in these terms limits liability where it would be unlawful to do so.
12. Ending the arrangement
- You or we can end this arrangement at any time by letting the other know. Please give us at least 2 weeks' notice where you can, so we can rearrange your booked lessons.
- We may stop working with you straight away if these terms are seriously broken or we have a safeguarding concern.
- You'll still be paid for lessons you taught before the arrangement ended, as set out above.
13. Changes and law
We may update these terms and will tell you about important changes in advance. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. Questions: hello@mathstutorcoventry.com.
